PhD Student (gn*) Biomedical Science

Job Id:  9759

(*gn=gender neutral)

The Department of Medicine A, Hematology, Oncology at the University Hospital Muenster is looking for a highly motivated PhD Student for the DFG-funded project ‘The role of ubiquitination in BMP signaling and iron homeostasis’ as soon as possible. The position is initially limited to three years.

Part-time with 65%
Salary according to TV-L E13

The DFG funded project aims to lay the groundwork for the treatment of disorders of iron metabolism related to both iron excess and iron deficiency, which are significant causes of morbidity and mortality. Our main goal is the characterization of the involvement of ubiquitination in the modulation of hepcidin production and iron homeostasis. Since ubiquitination is amenable to pharmacological manipulation, the development of drugs that target specific components of the ubiquitination pathway may have major therapeutic potential in the treatment of iron-related diseases.

Your Role:
The successful candidate will elucidate the mechanism by which specific E3 enzymes regulate the expression of the hepatic hormone hepcidin as well as iron homeostasis. In addition to the in vitro characterization, the functional significance of novel regulators will be investigated in animal studies in vivo.

Your tasks will encompass:

  • Independent performance of experiments, as well as documentation and analysis of obtained research data
  • Design and plan experimental approaches to test scientific hypotheses
  • Participation in scientific conferences, presentation of results as well as preparation of scientific publications

Your Profile:

  • Master’s degree (or equivalent qualification) in Biology, Biomedical Science or equivalent
  • Background knowledge in cell culture and basic molecular techniques (qPCR, immunoblotting)
  • You are a self-starter with the ability to work independently and in a team
  • Willingness to carry out animal experiments (mouse), experience in this field is an advantage
  • Proficient English language and communication skills
  • High degree of motivation and enthusiasm for research

We Offer:

  • Extensive individual training, development opportunities and continuous supervision
  • Research laboratories with state-of-the-art equipment
  • Working as part of a young and dynamic research team in a collaborative atmosphere

Opportunity for a research stay in the lab of collaboration partners to expand your scientific knowledge and increase your experimental portfolio.

We look forward to receiving your application via our online application including a cover letter, your CV and at least two references who can be contacted until 13.11.2024.
