PhD Student (gn*) Physics, Biophysics, Biomedical Imaging
Fixed term of 3 years | Part-time with 65% (25 hours/week) | Salary according to TV-L E13 | Clinic for Radiology – Experimental Magnetic Resonance Group
We are UKM. We have a clear social mission and, with our focus on healthcare, research, and teaching, we bear a unique responsibility.
To meet our high standards every day, we are looking forward to your scientific support at the Clinic for Radiology. As one of Germany's leading university radiology departments, we provide all outpatients and inpatients at UKM with state-of-the-art diagnostic imaging and image-guided therapy – ideally with you on board!
RESEARCH PROJECT:
We are seeking a highly motivated PhD student to join our interdisciplinary research team to develop a novel biophysical modeling approach based on diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging to comprehensively characterize the tumor microenvironment (TME). Tasks will involve the development of improved biophysical models and corresponding MRI data acquisition protocols to characterize both cellular and vascular properties of the TME. The approach will be validated using a combination of in silico models, computer simulations, and in vitro experiments using tumor spheroids grown in perfusable bioreactors, as well as in vivo studies using a murine colorectal carcinoma model. By enabling the examination of the TME within a single scan session, this new method aims to improve cancer staging and therapy monitoring, and ultimately enable more personalized treatment plans for patients. RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Developing, validating, and applying biophysical models of the tumor microenvironment, based on diffusion MRI data
- Implementing MR sequences on a preclinical MRI scanner
- Collecting and analyzing MRI data and performing biophysical modelling
- Collaborating with the partner institution that provides the bioreactors
- Participating in a local graduate school and presenting research findings at internal meetings and international conferences
REQUIREMENTS:
- Master’s degree in Physics, Biomedical Imaging, or a related field
- Strong interest in magnetic resonance, biomedical imaging and biophysical modelling
- Programming skills (C++, Matlab, Python)
- Willingness to perform animal experiments (FELASA qualification is beneficial)
- Previous experience with diffusion MRI, biophysical modelling, and tumor models is beneficial
- High motivation for scientific work and willingness to contribute to an interdisciplinary team
- Good English communication skills (spoken and written); German skills are advantageous
WE OFFER:
- Salary according to tariff agreement, extra annual payment, and company pension plan (VBL)
- 30 days of vacation per year, plus two additional days off on Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve
- Wide range of training and professional development opportunities
- A respectful and appreciative work environment within a diverse team
