PhD Student (gn*) Pediatric Hematology and Oncology
Fixed-term of 3 years | Part-time with 65% | Salary according to TV-L E13 | Department of Pediatric Hematology and Oncology
We are UKM. We have a clear social mission and, with our focus on healthcare, research, and teaching, we bear a unique responsibility.
To meet our high standards every day, we are looking forward to your scientific expertise – ideally with you on board!
The Department of Pediatric Hematology and Oncology at the University Children’s Hospital Münster is offering a PhD student position as part of an exciting project in the Kerl research group. The Kerl group investigates cellular heterogeneity and communication in pediatric tumors. We aim to explore the mechanisms driving cellular transformation in pediatric ependymomas, particularly how benign subependymomas transition to aggressive ependymomas.
The project "Epigenetic mechanisms in the physiological development and malignant transformation of primordial germ cells" is embedded in the DFG-funded Collaborative Research Centre 1748 ‘Principles of Reproduction’. The CRC 1748 involves scientists of the University of Münster, the University Hospital, and Max Planck Institute Münster, as well as of the RWTH Aachen.
In this project, we will identify epigenetic modifiers in a single cell CRISPR screen that are relevant for physiological as well as SMARCB1-related pathological PGC development (transformation). Clinical impact of these epigenetic modifiers will be assessed by querying two clinically relevant cohorts.
You will conduct, analyse, and interpret the results e.g. of CRISPR technology and validation of experiments. In doing so, you will be supported in analysing data by bioinformatic pipelines previously established in the Kerl group and by collaborating partners.
REQUIREMENTS:
- A Master’s degree (or equivalent) in biology or a related field.
- Practical experience in molecular biology techniques (e.g., RNA/DNA extraction, sequencing).
- Familiarity with bioinformatics tools and data analysis for single-cell RNA sequencing and epigenetics (or willingness to learn).
- Strong analytical skills and the ability to work independently within a team.
- A commitment to scientific rigor and enthusiasm for interdisciplinary research.
WE OFFER:
- A highly motivated and communicative research environment within a successful translational working group
- A thorough introduction in the skills needed accompanied by supervision and guidance to develop oneself within a fascinating research field
- Access to advanced methodologies, including cutting-edge single-cell sequencing and spatial transcriptomics platforms
- Modern infrastructure and a state-of-the-art-laboratory with committed colleagues to manage project-related challenges
- Support of new research ideas beyond the existing research program
- A unique opportunity to contribute to innovative research with clinical and translational implications
